After enjoying several decades as Chrysler’s flagship vehicle, the Imperial became a separate brand in 1955. For 1957, the cars received their own special platform, further differentiating them from the rest of the lineup. With more interior space adn nearly every contemporary luxury feature available, Imperials were strong competitors in the full-size luxury vehicle space. A variety of body styles were offered, from standard sedan to pillarless coupe. For those who desired even greater exclusivity, the Imperial was offered as a limousine finished by Ghia of Italy.
Imperials destined for limousine use were built on the convertible chassis and shipped to Ghia’s facilities in Italy. There, they were lengthened and reworked by a team of artisans. Completion took over a month, with costs dramatically higher than nearly any competitor. Unsurprisingly, the high cost kept production numbers down: only 132 are known to have been made from 1957-1965. Naturally, most of these were utilized for government or executive motor pools when new.
The sensational 1964 Imperial Crown Presidential Limousine featured here is finished in stunning Formal Black over an interior trimmed in Black leather up front and Grey wool in in the rear. This exquisite Six-Window Presidential Limousine was used by Jacqueline Kennedy in the funeral possession to Arlington Cemetery for her husband President John F. Kennedy in November 1963. The car also appeared in President Lyndon B. Johnson’s inauguration, where it was photographed and videoed for television. Jacqueline continued using the Imperial through 1964, whereupon it returned to the White House’s motor pool. Subsequently, it was utilized by President Johnson on a variety of occasions.
