For the third iteration of the SL-Class, Mercedes-Benz created what would become one of their most recognizable models of the era. As with the W121 190 SL, the new W113-generation SL was designed primarily as a personal luxury roadster. However, instead of the rather tepid Inline-4 powering the 190 SL, the new 230 SL was graced with a 2.3L Inline-6. The new car was also designed with safety in mind, with designated crumple zone and a rigid passenger cell. Naturally, the car was a major hit upon its introduction at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show.
Of course, enthusiasts demanded more power and greater luxury, so Mercedes responded first with the upgraded 250 SL in 1966 and the 280 SL a year later. A significant majority of the much-improved 280 SL were sold in the US, most of which with automatic transmissions, power steering, and other touring-oriented luxury features. Of those, many were purchased by celebrities and VIPs of the period, all of whom undoubtedly appreciated the W113’s timeless style, exceptional build quality, and impressive driving experience. Today, 280 SLs are some of the most desirable Mercedes of this period, with the final 1971-model year cars being some of the most desirable.
The sensational 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Roadster featured here is finished in stunning Dark Olive Green with a beautiful Cognac interior with a Brown folding soft top and a removable body-color hardtop.
